Memorial Day at Sunday, May 25 at Margraten, where many soldiers of the 29th Infantry Division rest forever, was a very fine and well attended event. Now that all of the 8302 graves are actively adopted again, the sea of crosses was sparkled by flowers, lots of flowers. For the first time ever a wreath was presented by the German Embassy in the Netherlands, like the German Lt. Colonel stated, to honor all of the American soldiers who died so far from home. It was well appreciated by the audience. Please note that the color guard was still "off duty" at these pictures! Here are some more pictures of the ceremony: picasaweb.google.nl/ClaassensLimbricht/MemorialDay2008MargratenNLTake care, Joost

Hi Joost, Thank you so much for the photos. They are so beautiful! I have a friend whose husband was contacted by someone in the Netherlands. George's Dad was in Stalag 17. I have not talked to him yet, but told her about you and the cemetery so she could inform him. I told them about you and what great work you have done on behalf of the American solder.

Hello Joost,
Thank you for the wonderful photos of Memorial Day at Margraten. May I give the link to my members of The American World War 11 Orphans Network? Many of them were there honoring their Fathers. I wanted to ask you for your permission before I would give it to anyone. If it's ok with you, I will put it on our List-server, which is only for members. Thanks, Janice

Hello Janice, Sure you can share these pictures, that's the idea about posting these! I was very glad to meet AWON's Gerry M. and other AWON members at Margraten, and I will be happy to meet her again when I will visit the US in September next, also to finally meet one of the 29th Division's Veterans who lives at Long Island. Take care, Joost

Hello again Joost, Thank you for letting me put the Memorial Day 2008 at Margraten on our list-server. Thanks to you, many of our members who have fathers buried there were able to view your lovely pictures. They asked that I thank you for them. This I am doing now.
Gerry told me she has met you at Margraten and she hopes to see you when you come here.
Thank you again, Janice

If you happen to be around: September 14 will bring the third performance of a Requiem at Margraten Cemetery. This year "Ein Deutsches Requiem" by Brahms. Check www.margratenrequiem.nl/requiem/index.html for more details (English language available). I will be visiting with my German friends who take care of Michel Ernst's grave at Margraten spurensuche.aldenhoven.de/soldatengrab/. At the end of September I look forward to visit Veteran Billy Melander (115th-Service Co) during my visit to the USA (NYC & Boston). Take care, Joost
