Just like today, 66 years ago a powerful storm swept through Normandy, giving the men of the 29th a respite in the drive for St. Lô. Spare a thought for all of the guys on those parallel ridges northeast of the city, under the German guns of Hill 101. The coming week would prove to be one of the worst and deadliest battles the 29th ID ever fought. Captain Cawthon of 2/116 recalled it “only as a boiling caldron that no man entered without dread or emerged from without being marked.”
