So what number would have been painted on the side of an LST - the Army Number or the Navy Number?
For example, LST 467/331 (Army/Navy) carried Co. D 175th Infantry. What was on the side of the ship?

The numbers on the front sides were Navy the Army numbers were on Army loading lists, Army vehicle info boards on the front of the embarking vehicle. Army numbers for the LST were found up to the mouth of the LST at the loading hard so the Navy could change the LST if needed from its planned numbered LST. Example. U.S. Navy, LST #61. U.S. Army Number.# 488. Embarkation point Falmouth East, PF1. Loaded total of 364 Army troops & 75 Army Vehicles from Units of the 29th Inf. Division. The vehicles were from the following units, 110th F.A. Bn, 111th F.A. Bn, 224th F.A.Bn, HQ- Sev. Btry.- Co. C. 104th Med Bn Clearing Co. 121st Engr Bn, 729th Ord LM Co, 227th F.A. Bn. Regards Bob.

Thanks, Bob.
An interesting note is that loading tables (http://www.americandday.org/Loading_Plan/Omaha_Beach_175th_RCT.html) says most of the personnel in D/175 were on LST 467/331 (Army/Navy), but information I got from Joe Balkoski, which if I recall correctly came from morning reports, says that D/175 was on LST 533. I guess the Navy made a "last minute" change.

I have D/175th also on LST 533 in the 175th Regt. Company Station list of 1944. The LST 533 docked at Trebah hard late afternoon on the 1st June along with LST 27. Both LST,s departed the hard at 2100hrs 1st June heading for berthing buoys nearby fully loaded. The next 2 LST,s to dock at Trebah hard before midnight were LST 266 & LST 262 . They both departed the hard at 0300 hrs 2nd June, There was a Navy LST 331 which docked at Falmouth East PF2 hard at Midnight 1st June, this hard could take 3 LST,s at any one time, which at that time were LST 331. LST 381. LST 523. They all departed PF2 hard at 1500hrs on 1st June. Bob.
