My father was in Cannon Company of the 116th Regiment, 29th Infantry Division during WWII. He is Andrew J. Soltes Jr.
This is my dads info in the unit rosters
Soltes Andrew, Jr J 33714785 Pvt CN116 4-Sep-44 fr repl depot to dy 31 Aug 648 116 Cannon
Soltes Andrew, Jr J 33714785 Pvt CN116 28-Nov-44 MOS changed to 767 648 116 Cannon
Soltes Andrew, Jr 33714785 Pfc CN116 11-May-45 LWA, shrapnel back, remained on dy 116 Cannon
Joe Balkoski memorialized an event in his book "Our Tortured Souls" that occurred on Nov 18, 1944 about my dad and Lt. Fedor. Joe sent this to me in an email before his book was published......."Along with Lt. Fedor, on November 18, 1944, Soltes moved into Setterich, Germany, with part of Company E, 116th Infantry. The story of that attack, and Fedor's and your father's actions are in My Tortured Souls "......My Dad and Fedor were awarded the Bronze Star for their actions on that day. My dad also received a Purple Heart later in the war. . I am trying to locate info on the general orders or any official document regarding the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star awarded to him. I believe that Fedor wrote a story that may have appeared in the Nov 1994 29er magazine as referenced in the index for the 29er. The index indicates it was in the Nov 1994 page 12. I can't locate a copy of that magazine.
Bronze Star for Heroism in Ground Combat see: Fedor, Bill and Soltes, Andrew (116 th Inf.) Nov. 1994, p. 12 Soltes, Andrew (CAN, 116th Inf.) Bronze Star Nov. 1994, p. 12
I understand that Lt. Fedor wrote this article or a book or memoir called "The Lieutenant Overslept" that references the Bronze Star award that he and my father received.
My father died in 1970 and he would tell me about how he and Fedor captured some 100 Germans. I also remember seeing a newspaper article about it as a child but I dont know what happened to it. Any information or direction on how to locate more info on these events or any other that someone may know of about my father would be greatly appreciated.
