Hi,
My father, Private George Gutschke ASN 385537), was in the 175th Regiment Company K 1st platoon. He landed in either Easy Red or Fox Green around 0700 on June 6th. I have an interview he did with the AP on July 11, 1944 where he recounts landing on the morning of the 6th. He fought with the 1st Infantry for 2 days before returning to the 29th on the 8th and being wounded on the 9th.
The American D Day website has him listed on the manifest for LST 337 (US ARMY LST 483). The landing table shows the leading elements of from LST 337 scheduled to land at 0900. But my father definitely said they were pressed into action in the early morning in the second wave.
I found another member of the 175th, Fred L. Cary, Jr. 175th Regimental Command HQ, who landed at “Omaha Red Beach, second wave.” He was a contributor to 29th Infantry Division: Short History of a Fighting Division.
I am trying to find the name of my father’s sergeant in 1st Platoon. He saved my father’s life telling him to drop everything but his rifle, ammo, and helmet. And both of them went over the side of their landing craft. But he never saw him again.
Is there any resource where I can locate the names of the soldiers in 1st platoon?
I understand that the bulk of the 175th landed around 1220 on June 7th, but why is it that every reference to the 175th has them landing en masse on the 7th?
Other members of the 175th that landed on June 6th include:
Barran Tucker 175th R Company G landed in Dog Green Sector and witness Cota telling the Rangers to lead the way.
Pvt Uttero Cosmo 175th Company H landed around Dog Green around 12:30 and is featured in a interview at the WWII Museum.
Pvt Izzy Rozen 175th Company G landed in the area of Dog Green around 0900.
John G. “Jack” Cuthbert 1st Battalion HQ landed on June 6th (featured “Voices of D-Day and friend of Joseph Balkoski).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone would like the interview, feel free to ask.
You can find the AP interview under “Invader Reports Nazis Beheaded Paratroopers” on Wed July 12, 1944. I found it in the Abilene Reporter but numerous newspapers carried it. He’s interviewed with a paratrooper who jumped on D-Day. The reporter left the ‘k’ out of his name spelling it “Gutsche.”
Thanks!
Kent
